Cocoa Beach is known for a variety of fun and exciting activities that can be enjoyed most times of the year. You have shuttle takeoffs nearby at the Kennedy Space Center. Cocoa Beach also has miles upon miles of gorgeous and pristine beaches. Another exciting way to spend your time at Cocoa Beach is to go wildlife watching. For the visitors who are unfamiliar with the area, Cocoa Beach sees hundreds of different species of animals in the area. You can easily go search out these unique animals in person by visiting one of the many local attractions or by booking a charter. Take a look at where and how you can go do Cocoa Beach wildlife watching:

Birdwatching

When it comes to wildlife watching, there is not a more dedicated base than those who participate in birdwatching. The Space Coast, the greater stretch of beaches that Cocoa Beach rests on, sees hundreds of different species of birds throughout the year. The temperate sub-tropic weather makes Cocoa Beach an ideal area for birds to flock to year after year. With over 300 birds to be seen, you will have your work cut out for you. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is nearby in Titusville. To date there have been 358 species of birds identified at the park. You can enjoy a guided automobile tour of the area or check out the exhibits in person. The Canaveral National Seashore is another popular area for birdwatching, along with fishing and other activities. While it’s also a great place to see rocket launches, the shuttles may scare off the birds during those windows. Both areas are located along the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, so catching a glimpse of a red-cockaded woodpecker or painted bunting is more easily achieved. Don’t forget about the annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival that is held each year in the area!

Alligator Viewing

Perhaps the most popular animal that visitors wish to see in the wild when they visit Cocoa Beach is the American alligator. While it can be scary running into one in the wild, they are easily seen when you book a nature tour on the St. Johns River or Indian River Lagoon. The best way to see these animals safely in person is by booking an airboat tour. These propelled airboats let you traverse across the marshes to areas where alligators are known to be. Professional guides will navigate for you and tell you fascinating details about these elusive creatures. It should go without saying but make sure to never try and pet an alligator out in the wild!

Wildside Tours

Birds and alligators are not the only animals that live in and around Cocoa Beach. You can catch a glimpse of most animals when you book an eco nature tour offered exclusively with Wildside Tours. This local tour company features a unique tour that is the best value in town. Each tour is approximately two hours in length and will take you across 6 to 15 miles, depending on which animals you are looking for. You will be taken out onto the water in smaller boats that can hold up to 26 people maximum. Other tour companies in the area use larger vessels making their experiences less intimate. Wildside Tours takes each passenger across the Thousand Islands Nature Preserve of Cocoa Beach along with the Banana River Lagoon. River guides will provide a personal experience as they recount details of the water and its environments. Many incredible animals that can often be seen during the tours include a variety of birds, dolphins, and manatees. These friendly creatures often love having visitors in the area and can be seen splashing around the water. Each tour is a passive viewing, so there will be no feeding or touching of the animals.

Bioluminescence Tours

One of the most unique wildlife viewings is with the local bioluminescence tours in the area. The ocean lagoons light up at night the blue and green glow of bioluminescence. The glow is technically from the plankton in the water that comes out and plays at night. Wildlife Watersports offer nighttime tours that will take you out into the warm waters of summer when the bioluminescence shines its brightest. These tours may also have you seeing fish and stingrays that also glide through the water at night.

No matter where your travel interests lie, you’re likely to find an activity to love in Cocoa Beach. That said, those willing to look a little further toward some truly exceptional excursions will find that nature itself offers up some of the most intriguing Cocoa Beach moments available. For a new look at your surroundings, consider booking a bioluminescence kayak tour while you’re in town!

The Beauty of Bioluminescent Waters

The terminology sounds complex, but the results are stunning. Cocoa Beach is a destination lucky enough to be surrounded by bioluminescent waters which provide observers with the incredible neon glowing effect that’s made by nature to mesmerize! While some have witnessed this natural wonder on their own and been captivated, others have found a way to jump right in and be a part of the experience. That’s where bioluminescence kayak tours come into play.

At night, certain areas of the water near and around Cocoa Beach may appear to glow or sparkle. This happens due to a number of natural factors happening below the waves. A chemical process in certain jellies (not to be confused with stinging jellyfish), crustaceans, algae, and smaller fish gives them the ability to glow—both attracting mates and illuminating prey. To the observer from above the waves, the water is a rainbow of blue or green lights, making for an amazing moment you won’t soon forget.

When you’re in Cocoa Beach or nearby, one of the best ways to view this amazing sight is by kayak. There are several area companies that offer clear kayaking tours where you can see right through the bottom of the kayak and down into the glow below. It’s an amazing night excursion option that guests find draws them back time and again.

Adventure Kayak of Cocoa Beach

With the team at Adventure Kayak of Cocoa Beach, guests 4 and up have the option of enjoying an evening bioluminescence kayak tour alongside a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Tours tend to focus on the Indian River Lagoon which has a high salt content and is fed by the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the waters hold a high concentration of dinoflagellates whose natural light and glow are used as protection. If you happen to book a tour on a particularly dark night, the effect of these dinoflagellates is delightful!  Adult prices begin around $45, and those 17 and under can enjoy the experience for $35 per person.

In general, the summer months are a fantastic time to view bioluminescence, and in the Cocoa Beach area, comb jellies have a way of stealing the spotlight. Tours with Adventure Kayak of Cocoa Beach generally last anywhere from 90 to 120 minutes total and depart from the Cocoa Beach Country Club located at 5000 Tom Warriner Boulevard.

Fin Expeditions

Another great tour option for guests staying in Cocoa Beach are the professionals at Fin Expeditions, who offer guided daytime and sunset tours as well as nighttime bioluminescence kayak tours. These tours are ideal for those 4 years of age and up (kids can ride tandem with an adult) and prices begin at $49. Stay in Cocoa Beach also offers $5 off per guest through our partnership with Fin Expeditions! The bioluminescence tours focus on the Banana River Lagoon, and you will enjoy paddling through the Thousand Islands of Cocoa Beach on daytime or sunset tours with the help of their experienced guides. No matter what tour you take, you’re sure to experience a one-of-a-kind Florida adventure you won’t soon forget.

Travelers across the globe are constantly faced with wanderlust. There’s seemingly no end to the adventures to be had or the new destinations to be discovered and they wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s why every year, the team at National Geographic puts together a list of the top 25 places that are worth experiencing. This list is ideal when it’s time to pack a suitcase, grab the passport, and hit the road or skies in the name of adventure.

In 2021, National Geographic’s list has taken a turn for the cosmic! Florida’s family-friendly Space Coast was featured in the lineup as a must-visit destination this year. It’s not hard to see why the Space Coast is so endlessly appealing to travelers from near and far. Featuring over 72 miles of scenic coastline, the Space Coast is as beautiful and refreshing as it is committed to the concept of space travel. Between the beaches, family-friendly activities, and space-focused facilities, the Space Coast is a dream come true for those seeking a destination where education, natural beauty, and entertainment are equally balanced.

What Makes the Space Coast So Unique?

The answer might just lie in the stars! For all of its coastal beauty, the Space Coast earns its name from the many space centers that call this area home base. Visitors to the Space Coast often bring a passion for pursuing galaxies unknown with them. It’s a place where those who have ever dreamed of what it would be like to be an astronaut can get an idea of what the job is like in reality!

The Space Coast is home to the Kennedy Space Center as well as the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Both of these destinations are known for their NASA-launched spaceflights that can be observed by visitors as well if travel lines up with a launch date. A trip to the Kennedy Space Center promises to be out of this world. It’s a family-friendly stop where guests can learn more about how space travel has evolved over time and even get a close-up look at the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The entire center is divided into mission zones and if you’re wanting even more from the experience, you can sign up for a behind-the-scenes bus tour that takes you out to the launch pad!

The Best of Beach Life Too

While there’s so much to learn and see about space in this area, it’s likely the destination made the list of must-visit locales thanks to its beach scene as well. Situated just 35 miles east of Orlando, the Space Coast is the perfect place to catch some Florida rays and relish in the impressive swells. Keeping your eyes open for seabirds is half the fun, especially when paired with the 8-foot swells this stretch of coastline is known for producing.

While watching the waves roll in can be a captivating sight, many visitors make their way to the Space Coast to indulge in the fun from a vantage point on the waves. Not to worry, there are many options from which to choose! Surfing is a popular activity in this area as is fishing thanks to the variety of species that linger below the surface of the water. If you’re up for more of a guided experience, you can hop on a Space Coast River Tour for a more leisurely moment, or an airboat tour when a heart-pounding pace is what you long for. Partnering up with the team at Wildside Tours is a great place to start when you just can’t wait to get up close with some of nature’s most amazing creatures. This area of Florida is home to everything from manatees and alligators to dolphins, coastal fish, and many migrating birds!

Get Golfing on the Space Coast

Of course, if you’re the type of person that can’t imagine a trip without a tee time on the itinerary, the Space Coast has a lot to offer you as well! This part of Florida is outfitted with 20 courses to pick and choose from when time on the greens is your idea of the perfect vacation. Whether you head to the Cocoa Beach Country Club or The Habitat at Valkaria, you’re sure to find yourself perfecting your short and long game in scenic surroundings.

Make Your Way to the Space Coast

There’s a reason National Geographic is showcasing the Space Coast this year, and there’s nothing like experiencing this destination for yourself! When you’re ready to make the most of an adventure this way, the property professionals at Stay in Cocoa Beach are here to help. Reach out today to learn more about our many Space Coast vacation rentals and how we can help you start planning your trip!

Every year, families across the country and world gather together to celebrate Easter. It’s fair to say that for the majority of those families, Easter 2020 looked drastically different than years past. In the name of heightened health and safety standards, many of us gave up well-loved traditions in order to protect our family and friends. Beyond the Easter holiday, a variety of other milestones, celebrations, and important moments were likely given up as well.

The sacrifices of 2020 are perhaps what make Easter 2021 such a special moment! While the world still works on getting back to a completely healthy place, things are looking up and there’s a sense of relief that comes with knowing this Easter may be just the right time to get together with those you love and enjoy the holiday somewhere scenic and new.

When you could use some well-deserved time away from home and can’t wait to pair your Easter experience with the scenery, activities, and time away that are sure to inspire, Cocoa Beach, Florida is calling your name. This delightful destination just south of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is loved by travelers for its beautiful surf, endless sun, and of course, endless sandy shorelines to enjoy.

Cocoa Beach is a beautiful place to get away this Easter because it offers up plenty of options for fun but balances those out with opportunities to remain socially distanced if needed, taking full advantage of the wide-open, coastal spaces that await. When you’re ready to plan your amazing Cocoa Beach Easter adventure, take the following into consideration to make even more of your time in here!

Savor access to a fully equipped kitchen during your stay where you can serve up those dishes that have long defined the Easter holiday for your family. When you’re done, you can just as easily enjoy the community features that many of our rentals provide access to.
